Evening Light and Telegraph Poles

This is the sort of subject I love!  Moments of light and subject that come together briefly to make something otherwise quite familiar into a worthwhile painting.  It is only a small study, not far from where I live, the evening light was warm and low which plunged the foreground hedge into silhouette and created long shadows of the telegraph poles.

I also enjoyed mixing the colours, it's tempting to go strong and saturated for that low light, but in this case the colours were slightly greyed out which created a lovely harmony in the painting.  Another thing I always attempt to do is to make a statement in as few brush marks as possible, the idea is to keep a fresh look about the work and allow your eye to fill in the blanks.

I often see these sorts of subject while I'm driving along, not able to stop, so this was a real treat being in the right place at the right time!
