Four Seasons and ROI

The Royal Institute of Oil Painters exhibition is now over and time has flown by.  The private view on 10th December was great and a nice chance to meet up with painting friends and to see some wonderful work.  A particular highlight was spending time with Peter Brown, one of my favourite painters.  He has an exhibition on at Messum's in Cork Street and also had some great paintings in the ROI show.  I met him very briefly at the Lynn Painter-Stainers exhibition last year and on both occasions he picked up awards - what a painter!  I also had the chance to meet and talk with Luis Morris who I had admired the work of for many years.  Luis was in the final of the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year and produces fantastic figure and portrait paintings with great accuracy and freshness (its worth doing an image search on google!)

The following week I went along to the portrait painting evening where you can paint alongside members of the ROI at the Mall Galleries with spectators watching you paint.  My inspiration and drive comes from the landscape and the effects of light on nature so I haven't given a lot of time or thought to portrait painting.  However, having seen some of the work produced at the ROI and having had a go myself, I have the urge to tackle a few self portraits and still lifes in the coming year.

I have six paintings currently in an exhibition at The Aubrey Gallery in Great Dunmow and they have a great piece in the January edition of 'Essex Life' magazine which features one of my paintings.  The exhibition 'Four Seasons' lasts until 25 January 2014.  A few examples of my work can be seen below.

Summer Sun - West Mersea

The Moors - Colchester

Wet Day in Suffolk
Now time to wrap the last presents, enjoy Christmas and prepare for a new year of painting.  Merry Christmas!
