Painting accepted for Royal Institute of Oil Painters 2011 exhibition

I am very pleased to have had one of my paintings accepted for the 2011 Royal Institute of Oil Painters annual exhibition.  The exhibition runs from 7th December to the 18th December at the Mall Galleries in London.  This is a great exhibition and showcases some of the best figurative oil painting today.  The ROI is home to many of my favourite artists who are some of Britain's leading figurative painters including Ken Howard, Trevor Chamberlain and David Curtis amongst others.  I will look forward to seeing provisional members Adebanji Alade's and David Pilgrim's paintings after meeting them at the Plein Air Brotherhood's exhibition.

I have included some quotes and links to the ROI website and the Mall Galleries site below.  Below is also an image of my painting.  It was painted outside with some finishing touches added in the studio, I wanted to keep it simple and focus on warm and cool colours and subtle light (something I am trying to investigate further in my work) .  I felt the composition lent itself to a panoramic with the strong horizontal lines being broken up with the verticals of the masts.

"The Institute's aim is to uphold the age-old tradition of painting in oils, whilst giving encouragement to outstanding young oil painters of our time."

"The only major national art society that is devoted exclusively to oil painting, featuring a wide variety of contemporary landscape, figurative and still-life paintings by some of the finest established artists working in oil today, alongside work by non-members."
