After visiting Dedham and Flatford again I painted this little one of the river. It was an overcast day and tonally the picture was very close. I have made an effort to keep the colours muted to give the impression of a wet overcast day. To prevent the painting looking 'flat' I have used quite purposeful brush strokes whilst keeping the focus of interest with the tonal change as the river bends out of sight.
I am going to produce a series of paintings from around the Stour between Dedham and Flatford focussing on the trees and trying to capture the autumn/winter atmosphere. It will be a challenge to produce dynamic paintings with subdued light and close tones, but something I think is important for me to investigate to develop my understanding of tonal values and relationships. I will post the results soon! The paintings will form part of my work at an exhibition at the Colne Gallery at Colchester Hospital during February 2012.
